Although you have to pass your theory test before you can take your practical test, it's recommended that you start studying for your theory test, but don't actually take it until you have some practical experience of driving.

The theory test is made up of two sections multiple choice questions and hazard perception video clips you must pass both parts of the test to pass the theory test.

The multiple choice part of the test comprises of 50 randomly selected questions. These questions test your understanding of the Highway Code and knowledge of road signs. To pass the multiple choice part you must answer 43 or more questions correctly within 57 minutes.

In hazard perception section you'll be asked to watch 14 one minute clips, in each clip there will be one or more potential hazards. There are fifteen potential hazards that you must identify by clicking the mouse as you see the hazard form; the earlier you see the hazard form the more points you will score.
You need to score 44 or more out of 75 to pass.
